Kiss Him, Not Me!: Kae Serinuma

31 December 2018, 4:00 PM

Kiss Him, Not Me!, known in Japan as Watashi ga Motete Dousunda, is a Romance, Comedy & Shoujo 14-volumes-long manga series written and illustrated by Junko, published by Kodansha year 2013. The manga also won "Best Shoujo Manga" at the 40th Kodansha Manga Awards. It got its own anime adaption in 2016, airing between October 6th and December 22nd, with 12 episodes.

"Kae Serinuma is a second year high schooler and an avid fujoshi who secretly ships her classmates, Igarashi-kun and Nanashima-kun. The death of her favorite anime character causes her to become stressed and locking herself in her own room for a whole week - and she loses weight rapidly. Now that Serinuma has become an attractive girl to her classmates, her snarky kouhai Shinomiya-kun, and her senpai Mutsumi, how is she going to deal with them ...with her constant BL-filled, fujoshi mind?!"

Kae Serinuma is the main protagonist of the series; a 2nd-year student who is a full-fledged otaku and fujoshi.

Personality-wise, Kae, as stated by herself, is quite easy to figure out. She is very carefree and prefers to go with the flow of things, not minding the small details. Whenever this part of Kae emerges, flowers tend to accompany her speech bubbles as a way to emphasize her being an air-head. The only time where Kae is extremely fired up is when anime/manga or yaoi is involved. In those moments, Kae takes on many of her pre-weight loss traits, such as small eyes, heavy sweating, and the occasional sly smile. Depending on her dedication and the situation relative to her "otaku-level", Kae can accomplish several extraordinary feats, such as helping the girls' soccer team win despite never having played soccer, and completing three cosplay ensembles from scratch for a school festival. Her other most notable feature is her kindness, but due to her Fujoshi-personality and previously unattractive status, Kae is also very oblivious and awkward when it comes to romance.

Kae´s sexuality isn't entirely discussed, but when she finds out that the five suitors like her, she takes them all seriously and shows interest in all of them. This is including Nishina, who is a girl.

Appearance-wise, Kae was first shown to have small eyes that were covered by her over-sized, circular glasses and dark hair that ended just a few inches below her shoulders which she often put into low pigtails. Her most noticeable feature at that time was her overweight body. Unlike other girls and her best friend, Kae had a rather rounded figure. However, after the death of her favorite anime character, Kae shut herself in her room for days and refused to come out, not even to eat. Because of this, she lost a lot of weight. Kae gains an eye-catching figure and is shown to have notably large breasts, which seemed to have come from when she was chubbier. She starts wearing her hair down and her blue-green eyes are revealed when she stops wearing her glasses. This results in her becoming extremely beautiful. Surprisingly, Kae seems to have a good fashion sense, often wearing cute and fashionable clothes whenever she is out.

I have to say, this short anime is gold, especially the first episode! It really draws you in quickly. And, this might be a bit embarrassing to admit but this anime sort of inspired me to try to lose weight... haha. Animes influence me A LOT so ofcourse this anime gave me some motivation. That is not neccessarily a bad thing though! Losing weight is very healthy indeed, so I am okay with it. Anyhow, I strongly recommend Kiss Him, Not Me! to everyone out there; girls, guys, old, young... everyone! It is such a funny and nice anime to watch.

How to say "Happy New Year" in Chinese, Korean and Japanese

27 December 2018, 5:15 PM

2019 is coming closer and closer with each day, and New Year is being celebrated all around the world by all sorts of people. Personally, due to religious reasons, I do not celebrate Christmas (thus, I did not make any remark on my blog about the day), but I do indeed enjoy New Year. To most of us, it feels like the old one has passed in the blink of an eye, while the new year lies ahead like a very long journey. However, New Year is also a time to celebrate beginnings, and to say goodbye to what has passed. This is true in every culture, no matter when New Year is celebrated.

So, how does one say "Happy New Year" in Chinese, Korean and Japanese? Let us find out!

1) In Chinese, "Happy New Year!" is "Xīnnián kuàilè !". The new year´s festival in China is not so important though because the spring festival is coming. Chinese New Year is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in modern China. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21st and February 20th.

2) In Korean, "Happy New Year!" is "Saehae bog manh-i bad-euseyo!". Fun fact, did you know that every Korean get 1 year older on January 1st on New Year´s Day? Yes, that’s how Korean age works and how Koreans get older, and that is why New Year´s Day is more special in Korea. There are also two New Year´s Day in Korea; one is "gujeong" and the other is "sinjeong". Gujeong is the New Year holiday based on the lunar calendar. It is considered more traditional than the other one, Sinjeong, which is based on the solar calendar.

3) In Japanese, "Happy New Year!" is "Akemashite omedetō gozaimasu!". While the calendar marks only January 1st as a holiday, in Japan, they celebrate the period from the 1st to the 3rd, known as Sanganichi. Some companies and stores close during this time, and a number of unique events and customs take place. In Japan, you will also hear "Yoi o-toshi o" at the end of the year and it is often translated into "Happy New Year!" in English. The difference between the two sayings is that "Yoi o-toshi o" is only used before the New Year.

Now you know what to say to some of your Asian friends when you greet them and wish them a Happy New Year! And to everyone reading this ofcourse, I want to say Thank You, for now I have been posting on this blog for 1 whole year. Thank you for everything and hopefully, the blog will stay up for much longer! I also wish y´all a big and Happy New Year~!

Durarara!! - Izaya Orihara

24 December 2018, 9:31 AM

"In Tokyo´s downtown district of Ikebukuro, amidst many strange rumors and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants, one urban legend stands out above the rest - the existence of a headless "Black Rider" who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.

Mikado Ryuugamine has always longed for the excitement of the city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend convinces him to move to Tokyo. Witnessing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes already seem to have been granted. But as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, along with Ikebukuro´s most colorful inhabitants, are mixed up in the commotion breaking out in their city."

Durarara!! (in Japanese, デュラララ!!), often shortened to DRRR!!, is an Action, Comedy, Mystery & Supernatural light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita, that adapted into a 24-episode-long anime in the beginning of 2010 to the summer later the same year (to be more exact; January 8th 2010 to June 25th 2010). Very well, time to talk about one of the characters, one called Izaya Orihara.

Izaya Orihara (in Japanese, 折原 臨也. His name also comes from a combination of the biblical Isaiah and Japanese for "the one who looks over the crowd".) is one of the main characters and antagonists of the Durarara!! series, a powerful and skilled underground information broker. He usually gives information for his own enjoyment, and he claims to love the entire human race, excluding another main Shizuo Heiwajima. Izaya is one of the founders of the gambling ring Amphisbaena, gang Heaven´s Slave and a member of the online group Dollars.

Appearance-wise, Izaya has short black hair and brown eyes. He is repeatedly described as a fragile-looking, handsome man with a beautiful face by other characters in the novels. However, he is also described by the same characters as appearing mischievous or otherwise unsavory. His regular outfit consists of a black coat with brown fur lining that goes down to his hips, along with a plain black long sleeved v-neck, pants, and dark brown shoes. In the novels, he occasionally dons a longer version of his coat that reaches down to his ankles. Some casual information; His birthday is on May 4th (at the introduction, he is 23 years old), blood type is O, height is 175 cm and weight is 58 kg.

Personality-wise, Izaya claims to love humanity, although his definition of "love" is much different than one would assume. What he specifically loves about humanity is the unpredictability of human nature, and he greatly enjoys putting people in enjoyable or chaotic situations in order to observe their reactions. With a thorough understanding of human behavior and tendencies, he is able to determine people´s thoughts and predict their reactions with high accuracy. Izaya is cunning and charming, but his manipulative nature prevents him from making any genuine or lasting bonds with others. He has a jolly and mocking personality, speaking informally with nearly all people. Although Izaya enjoys conflict, often showing up wherever there is potential for one, he usually stays out of it, preferring to observe the fight instead of directly taking part in it. When he needs to protect himself physically, Izaya uses a flickblade and is highly skilled in parkour and freerunning. He is a person most of the characters, himself included, could never trust, because they never know what he could or would do.

Most people are most interested in Izaya Orihara. I really like everything about Izaya. His background, his appearance, his personality, his actions, his thoughts, etc... It is his cunning side that I like so much, it makes everything funnier in the anime too. I do not care that Izaya is seen as an antagonist, I respect it all about him. And I love his pocket knife; I would love to have one like him!
