Why I practice self-care

Self-care brings sanity and peace back into our lives. When we take care of ourselves, our mind, body and soul - we can take care of others. It is a human self-regulatory function. Broadly speaking, it can be defined "as the practice of activities that mature person initiates and performs, within time frame, to promote and maintain person well-being, healthy functioning and continuing development throughout life" (Orem, 2001, p.52).

To me, engaging in self-care is essential for a healthier, happier life. It is something that helps nourish the soul from within, and allows us to build better relationships. It helps me rewind, calm my mind, and find balance in everyday chaos. Small actions such as blocking out time to read a book, go for a walk, puzzle, paint, listen to a podcast, or simply just spend time with family - can provide us with the motivation and pleasure to let go of stress, worry, and any other negative emotional baggage.

I have found that practicing self-care allows me to be more creative, it increases feelings of wellbeing, as well as it strengthens my attention and productivity. Ultimately, I inspire myself and it helps me keep looking for ways to always develop and improve as a person.

How do you find time for self-care throughout the week? And what does self-care mean to you?
