Stuck in the avalanches in brennerpass

Monday, 22 January, 2018, 6:06 PMGermany, About Vanlife

So, after a few days here in Garmisch-Partenkirchen we finally thought that the weather would allow us to go through the alps and the brennerpass. It's been too much snow the past days and today was the first day when it was a little bit warmer. We prepared to leave, started driving and suddenly saw the signs to the brennerpass and Innsbruck with crosses over them?! We were a bit confused and turned around to check what was going on.

A lady told us that there had been several avalanches and that no one could go anywhere, that we are all stuck here.

We checked the german news, there had been five avalanches, all the roads to Austria and Italy is closed and people have been hurt and died in the mountains.

Since we're kind of stupid we started driving towards Innsbruck, just to see how far we could get and to check out the roads. After a few kilometers there were trucks and tourist buses standing on the way with warning lights. They had closed the road. One of them had been a bit further and told us that the avalanches had covered the road with snow. We just had to turn around and go back.

Yesterday we tried to drive a bit on the road but we turned back because of all the snow, niklas even said that it looked like it could be avalanches. The same rood that today was destroyed by one of the avalanches ...

Military on the way to clear the roads and make sure people are okay.

Like this isn't enough now it's raining really heavy and the government announced warnings about flooding. Something that almost never happens here. How come we always end up in chaos?

Someone said that the roads will open again tomorrow. We'll might make a new try to cross the alps then. Wish us good luck ;)

Swedish papers did a phone interview with us, "stuck in the chaotic weather"

The witches of werdenfels

An other bad decision (we make a lot of them) was to go up in one of the mountains with the van, we thought we could at least try ;) the last kilometers we had to walk because the roads where cut off.

Our interesting and a bit scary destination was the ruins of the castle werdenfels, the place of turturing and execute women who was accused of witchcraft. We are thinking of doing an article of this place. More to come...

Brennerpass in rough conditions (winter)

Sunday, 21 January, 2018, 2:56 PMGermany, About Vanlife

We decided to take the brennerpass from Germany to Italy. As soon as we passed Munich in Germany and came to the alps it started snowing really heavy. We thought that this may be the dumbest thing we have ever done... but we continued.

The mountains just got bigger and bigger, we realized that we couldn't continue in this weather condition and stoped at the German Olympic town Garmish-Partenkirchen for a night or two. We found this parking with a beautiful view of the mountains around us. During the night we had a lot of snow. We woke up to this:

Since we still haven't bought a shovel even though we have been talking for months about that we need to have one with us, there wasn't much more to do than go ask around to borrow one. We showed a picture of the car and tried to explain the situation and finally a nice lady at a store had one we could borrow. It took like an hour to get the van out from there...

Pretty nice view to wake up to though!
