FASHION HAS LOST AN ICON – KARL LAGERFELD

One of the most iconic fashion designers in the industry, Karl Lagerfeld, has died at the age of 85. Lagerfeld had what felt like an immortal soul, even with the knowledge of his illness; his death came as a shock to many of us.

This man has had a groundbreaking impact on the fashion industry as we know it today and his legacy shall most certainly outlive him for many, many years. The most recent CHANEL collections had unfortunately not been at an equal standard to his previous works of art during the peak of his creativity and the criticism was indeed as brutal as always. However, the comments were still not as vicious as the ones from the deceased’s own mouth, who was known for his racist, sexist, misogynistic, islamophobic, rape apologetic and body shaming remarks. This was a big part of his overall personality and should therefore not be brushed under the rug, despite his tragic death. This insensitive, arrogant and despicable man made CHANEL and FENDI what they are today and should be remembered for both who he truly was and what he brought to the industry.

To sum this up, here are a few of his remarks:

Talking about the #MeToo Movement: Lagerfeld stated that he was “fed up” with the #MeToo movement and that what shocked him the most was “the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened. Not to mention the fact that there are no prosecution witnesses” — as if the problem was memory and as if there are usually witnesses to sexual assaults. He continues with, ““If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting even!”

When speaking about Germany taking in so many Syrian refugees:“One cannot – even if there are decades between them – kill millions of Jews so you can bring millions of their worst enemies in their place,”

Fat shaming Adele: (One of his many fat shaming comment about women) "I prefer Adele and Florence Welch," he said. "But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
