Yesterday I got to experience a deep Austrian tradition called St Nicholas after a Christian saint. On the 6th of December St Nicholas comes with gifts, and that’s a tradition in several different countries. But on the 5th in Austria “Krampus”, a goat like demon, comes with St Nicholas to scare children. The tradition is for people to dress up as Krampus and go around their neighborhood and hit the naughty children. You have to read a poem for the Krampus to leave you. The Krampus has big cowbells hanging around their waist making a loud sound so that you know that they are coming.
During the dinner yesterday we got two different Krampus groups coming into our dining room. Yes I got hit, and yes I had to read a poem German.
What a fantastic unique experience from a real village in the Austrian alps.
