Glamlite - Ice Cream Dream Palette

      Saturday, 30 January, 2021, 2:00 pm

For the past 2 years or so I have heard many people rave about how amazing the Glamlite formula is and I was always curious about it. However, I was slightly put off by the insane and somewhat bulky packaging, so I wasn't really drawn to their products until this palette released. I received this as a Christmas gift from my lovely sister and I was so excited to try it out and I've spent the past month playing with it and I have some thoughts to share!

First off, this palette comes in the most insane outer packaging. It's so cute but again, insane. Glamlite tend to go all out with their packaging (I'd recommend checking out their website if you're unfamiliar with the brand). I'm going to keep this ice cream truck outer packaging and hopefully I can display it somewhere!

This was the first palette I was aware of from Glamlite that had more standardised packaging. The front has a really cute raised, 3D ice cream sprinkle design which is a really cute detail. It's still pretty sleek so it doesn't impact how you could store it.

      Shades & Colour Story

The main reason I was drawn to this palette was the lighter, almost pastel shades in the bottom 3 rows. I found it a bit weird there were so many neutral shades but then I remembered ice cream cones exist. However I do find it a bit strange they chose to include 5 quite similar brown shimmers. Although there is some slight variation, I don't think they were all necessary, I would wanted to keep 2-3 shades and had the depth in tone be a bit more varied. I also found the shade Strawberry and Rainbow Sherbet are also very similar too, I would I have loved if Rainbow Sherbet had been more red-toned.

There seems to be an absence of deepening shades, I would have liked a deeper purple matte, a deeper green matte and a deeper blue matte to add more depth to the looks you can create with this palette. I found I reached for Chocolate a lot more than I thought I would because there aren't really any other shades that can add depth.

      Swatches

I swatched these in columns from left to right on bare skin in natural lighting.

      Looks

For the first look I created I used Mint Chocolate as my transition shade and Cookie Monster to deepen. I then used a combination of the two shades on my lower lashline. I tried put down some glitter glue on my lid and inner corner before packing Cotton Candy lid and on the inner corner I used French Vanilla.

I started with Pumpkin in the crease and along the lower lash line before deepening with the shade Butter Pecan. On the lid I used Pecan Praline and for my inner corner I used French Vanilla.

As for this look I used Mochi as my transition shade and Bubblegum in my crease. After that I used Raspberry to deepen the crease even further, before placing some glitter glue on my lid and inner corner. On my lid I used Strawberry and in my inner corner I used French Vanilla.

For this look I used Mango on the inner part of my crease and on the outer half I used the shade Pistachio. I then deepened the outer half of my crease using the shade Green Tea to deepen. On top of some glitter glue I used Lemon on the inner half of my lid and Birthday Cake on the outer half of my lid. Again my inner corner colour is French Vanilla.

I started with Raspberry in my transition area before adding Black Cherry in my crease and on the inner and outer third of my lid. Then I took the shade Chocolate to further deepen where I had already placed Black Cherry. I used some concealer on the centre of my lid before placing Salted Caramel on top. On my inner corner I used French Vanilla.

I started this look by using Honey Lavender as a transition and crease shade. I then took some of the shade Chocolate to deepen it further, which took a bit of time blending. I then packed on Gelato on the outer half of my lid and Blueberry Cheesecake on the inner half of the lid. I then took combined French Vanilla and Blueberry Cheescake as my inner corner highlight.

For this look I started with the shade Orange Cream as transition before taking Red Velvet in the outer crease, outer lid and lower lashline. I then cut my crease using a white concealer, before packing on Rainbow Sherbet on my outer lid and Lemon on inner lid. On the centre of my lid I sort of mixed the shades together and I also used a little of the shade Strawberry. For the inner corner I used French Vanilla.

I wanted to see how neutral I could take this palette. I started with Peanut Butter in my crease before deepening it with Chocolate. On the lid I used Strawberry Cheesecake with a little bit of Cookie Dough and French Vanilla on the inner corner.

For this look I used Raspberry as a general crease and transition shade and also ran that along my lower lash line. I then took some of the shade Chocolate to deepen the crease as well as a little bit along my lower lash line. I then took some glitter glue all over my lid and inner corner before applying Taro all over the lid. For the inner corner I layered French Vanilla and Blueberry Cheesecake.

      formula overview

After using this palette for this last month, I can see why they Glamlite formula gets so many rave reviews. This matte formula is incredibly blendable, it did not take long at all to to get a very nice blend every time I've used it and I could very easily combine shades like Raspberry and Chocolate without too much trouble. The mattes remind me a bit of the Emme Cosmetics formula, as when they swatch they're a little bit flakey and they feel quite powdery yet not dry (if that makes any sense). I do quite like formulas like this as I've found that that means they're very easy to work with.

The shimmer formulas in this palette varied a little bit, but in general they're all quite metallic. For context, I like super metallic and sparkly shimmers so I have very high standards when it comes to shimmers and for an eyeshadow palette, these are pretty intense. I tend to be a bit disappointed with shimmers in palettes nowadays when they don't perform like my favourite indie brand shimmers. There is some fallout to them though but I don't mind that too much but just thought I'd share that. I tend to almost always use glitter glue whenever I use shimmers and this did help a bit with fallout. French Vanilla was by far the most flakey but in general the other shades applied very smoothly.

      Final thoughts

I really have enjoyed playing with this palette! The formula is incredible, all the shadows worked wonderfully for me and I can see myself reaching for this palette a lot. I definitely understand why the Glamlite formula is so highly rated!

The con of this palette for me is definitely the colour story, I think this could have been edited just a bit and skipped some of the repetitive shades and replaced them with some deeper colourful mattes. Although I like the fact that you can take this palette in a more neutral direction, you can only get like 2 more neutral looks from this palette yet there are so many neutral shades there just isn't a lot of variation.

If you like the colour story then I would definitely check out this palette! I'm definitely considering buying more products from the brand in the future.

      Thanks for reading!

Kaleidos Makeup - Futurism VI Lunar Lavender

      Saturday, 2 January, 2021, 4:10 pm

Kaleidos is a brand I've been eyeing for a while now, so when I saw their Black Friday sale I took full advantage. One of the items I decided to pick up was their Lunar Lavender palette. This palette launched in the late summer 2020 and while the general consensus was that this was a good palette there was some talk about this palette not quite living up to the standards of the Kaleidos formula. So of course I had to try it myself.

This palette retails for $24 full price (I believe the sale was a 25% discount?) and contains 6 shades; 4 mattes and 2 shimmers.

One of the things that I really like about Kaleidos Futurism palettes is the packaging. They all look absolutely stunning and capture the colour story on the inside as well. Another really cool thing about these palettes is that you can pop out the shadows and the pans are magnetic, which just opens up so many possibilities.

      Shades

Nocturnal is a mid-toned brown matte with a neutral undertone.

Moonroof is a periwinkle duochrome that shifts to a warm purple that has flecks or blue shimmer running through it. This shadow reminded me a bit of the shade Abrasion by Clionadh.

Dreamscape is a pink shimmer with flecks of silver sparkle. This shadow doesn't really have much of a base to it so when it's swatched it doesn't really show how nice it is.

Midnight Flora is a mid-toned cool purple.

Wisteria is a light matte lavender.

Crater Grove is a medium-deep brown matte with purple undertones.

I think this colour story is lovely, if somewhat confining. I'm not sure all the mattes were necessary, in my personal opinion when applied on the eye the browns look pretty similar and the two purples are indistinguishable. I think the colour story could have been fine-tuned ever so slightly and it would have made a big difference, for example deepening the shade Midnight Flora and Crater Grove, or swapping one of the browns for an intense inner corner highlight shade.

      Swatches

      Looks

For the first look I used Wisteria as transition shade and then I used Nocturnal in my crease. Using a combination of these two shades along my lower lash-line. I then took a tiny bit of Crater Grove to deepen the crease ever so slightly on the outer lid. For the lid I took some glitter glue on a flat shader brush before placing the shade Dreamscape where I had applied the glitter glue. For my inner corner I used a bit of Dreamscape.

For this look I used Wisteria as an all round transition shade, before taking Midnight Flora in my crease and slightly above. For my lower lashline I used Midnight Flora before blending it out ever so slightly using Wisteria. On my lid I put down some glitter glue before packing on some of Moonroof. For my inner corner I applied some of the Colourpop Supershock shadow in Mycelium before tapping some of Moonroof on top.

For my third look I used Nocturnal in my transition area before taking Crater Grove in my crease as well as on the inner and outer half of my lid, leaving the centre if my lid. I then took that same shade along my lower lash line. On the centre of my lid and on my inner corner I used some of the shade Dreamscape.

When creating this look I used Wisteria inner half of my crease and lower lash line and then used Midnight Flora outer half my crease and lash line. I then packed Dreamscape on the lid and inner corner.

      formula overview

The shimmers in this palette don't have a lot of base pigment which reminds me a little of how pressed glitters are. However these are definitely shimmers and not glitters! They are highly impactful and can look intense and textured, almost like topper shades. This allows for more versatility within the palette as you could layer these shimmers on top of the mattes in the palette and it would give different effects. However, they do have quite a lot of fallout so if you have a glitter glue I'd recommend using it with these shimmers as it will help. Fallout isn't a deal breaker for me as I don't mind doing my eyeshadow first but keep that in mind!

The mattes are decent, I was slightly apprehensive about trying them as I'd seen that the mattes had received mixed reviews. While I wouldn't describe them as the most pigmented shadows I didn't have many issues. The formula of the mattes is similar to Urban Decay in that there is a lighter amount of pigment and therefore feels quite blendable. There is a bit more kick-up in the pan that with Urban Decay shadows but nothing excessive. I enjoyed working with this formula. Although the mattes were good, the shimmers are what really stood out to me.

      final thoughts

I'm very happy I purchased this palette. Although it's not perfect I enjoyed using it and love that the pans are magnetic and I'll be able to be more creative than with your standard palette. The shimmers are like sparkly magic, which I love and the mattes are pretty user friendly. I'm excited to try more from the brand!

      Colourpop x RawBeautyKristi

      Saturday, 5 December, 2020, 5:52 pm

I hadn't planned on posting this review now but I felt I had to get this up before this collection restocks on the 11th of December. I know this was a really popular collection and wanted to get some different looks up to give you all an idea of what it's like before the restock!

This was my first ever purchase from Colourpop and I feel like I'm one of the last people to try the brand. I am really happy I waited until their collaboration with RawBeautyKristi released. I have been a fan of hers for a couple of years now and if you don't know who she is, you're missing out! Anyway, I am very pleased that I waited until this release because I am utterly obsessed with the inspiration behind this collection, the colours and the presentation.

The colour story in this palette is what I'd describe as a grungy-rainbow. I love tones like this, it's such a fun twist and yet makes perfect sense with the inspiration behind the collection, (that being Washington state with a nod to the grunge scene). I love wearing what I'd describe as wearable colourful eyeshadow looks, i.e. colours that aren't at a maximum saturation but still pack a punch.

SuperShock shadow in Like a Moss

      SuperShock shadow in Mycelium

      Eyeliner in the shade Marigold

I picked up two of the SuperShock shadows in Like a Moss and Mycelium. Like a Moss is a light neutral brown with a slight green-gold shift. Mycelium is a pale neutral pink champagne colour that has a lot of flecks of silver sparkles. The liner I purchased from the collection was in the shade Marigold, which is a medium bright yellow that leans slightly on the orange side.

      Swatches

      Looks

For my first look I used Puffball in my crease and Fiddlehead to deepen my crease as well as on the outer corner and lower lashline. I packed Evergreen on my lid and added some of Like a Moss (Supershock shadow) on top.

For this look I used Old Growth as transition, Amanita in crease and lid. Then just to deepen the outer corner I took a tiny bit of Let it Rain and placed it there. Then to add some shimmer I took the SuperShock shadow in Mycellium on the lid and inner corner.

I think this might be my favourite look! Here I used Ranier in my crease and a combination of Fiddlehead and Emerald City on my lower lashline. To connect these two colours I used Homegrown, which I used to wing out the look ever so lightly. On the lid I used a combination of Evergreen and the Supershock in Like A Moss. I then used a combination of a random green eyeliner and the liner in Marigold to create the right shade of green in my waterline.

Contrasting this, this was probably my least favourite look. Here I used Fiddlehead on the inner portion of my crease before taking PNW on the outer half of my crease. To blend the two together a bit I used Emerald City. I then repeated the same steps on my lower lashline. Then, I packed West Coast on my lid. In my waterline, I used the liner in Marigold on the inner half before taking a green eyeliner on the outer third and blending them together to create a gradient effect.

Here I used Chantarelle in my crease before using a bit of Rainer to deepen the crease. I then took the same shade on my lower lashline and on my inner and outer lid to start creating a halo eye. Then I took Homegrown to deepen up that same shape before placing West Coast on the centre of the lid, on my inner corner and a tiny bit on the centre of my lower lashline. Finally I used some of the Marigold liner on my waterline.

To create this blue look I used PNW in my crease and spent a bit blending it out before taking that same shade on the lower lashline. I then deepened the crease slightly using Let it Rain. On the lid I used a combination of Evergreen and the Supershock shadow in Like a Moss, I also used these two as an inner corner highlight.

For this look I used Chanterelle on the inner half of my crease and Amanita on the outer half of my crease. These two shades blended pretty well on their own but I took a tiny bit of Rainier just to ensure it was blended sufficiently. I then repeated the same steps on my lower lashline. I took some concealer and cut my crease and then gently places some of West Coast where I had applied the concealer.

      Formula overview

So I can't exactly compare this to other products from the brand but these are my thoughts as someone who is a newbie to these formulas.

The quality of the eyeshadow palette is pretty good overall and all the shades were pretty easy to work with. The two shimmers in this palette are decent and I have no complaints about them but at the same time I wasn't wowed. That's probably more of a reflection on that I have a lot of exceptional, textured and sparkly eyeshadows in my collection already so I think I'm a bit spoilt. I wasn't blown away, but that being said there are some really nice SuperShock shadows in this collection instead.

The mattes are also pretty good, There was quite a bit of kick up in the pan when I dipped my brush, personally that doesn't really bother me all that much but I just thought I'd mention it just in case. The blue, PNW, was a bit harder to blend out on its own but I think most people would probably use another shade to blend colours like that out so it's not really a reflection on the formula. I have other matte formulas I prefer but I would definitely purchase mattes from Colourpop in the future.

The eyeliner is really nice and I found it wore reasonably on me. It's a nice smooth formula and it didn't tug on my eye. I'd definitely consider buying more eyeliners from the brand in the future.

The formula I was most excited to try were the SuperShock shadows. I've always wanted to know how they'd feel and perform on the eye. After trying them, I really understand the hype. They have something between a gel and putty-like texture and they pick up a lot easier on the finger or if you dig in to the product a bit to scoop out some of the product. Both of the Supershocks I have wore really nicely and added a bit of oomph to my eye looks. I really enjoy using them. I have heard they dry out so I intend to use them as much as I can before that happens.

      Final thoughts

I'm very pleased I purchased this collection. It's an amazing concept and I am really happy with all the products I tried. If you're on the fence about purchasing something from the collection, from what IΓ€'ve tried I think it's really good.

If you're not sure what to purchase from this collection, if you like the colour story of the palette I'd go for it! It's not expensive and I think you get good quality for your money. If you don't really like the colours in the palette I'd highly recommend the SuperShock shadow in Mycelium. This is such pretty and dimensional product that captures the light so beautifully and would pair really nicely with lots of looks.

Do you plan on purchasing anything from this collection? Thanks for reading!
