TIME. IS. FLYING. I swear to god. I've been here for well over a month now which has passed by so quickly. At the same time, I've done a lot during this time. Studying, mainly. I've taken tests, handed in essays, and completed my first midterm last week. It is challenging and I definitely need to work hard. But I enjoy everything I learn (at least in retrospect, post-cramming).
Also I got a job! At the Communications department in the university. I've been instructed by these super nice seniors and now I'm starting to work my own hours. Mainly I'm at the front desk, answering calls (it's the main number to the university) and transferring them and greeting visitors (it's the first department you reach as you enter the building). As well as some other small day to day tasks. My boss is the media manager, and in the future I'll help with some media projects for the university. I'm really happy to get this opportunity to get some work experience while making some money at the same time. Right now I work 8,5 hours a week which is very reasonable for me to still get homework done.
Other than that, I'm looking to start getting involved in some clubs in the university. I ran for class representative, but was unfortunately not elected. As of right now, I've joined Debate Club and Student to Student Dialogue. STS-Dialouge is a program where we meet every other week to Skype with students who pursue an education in a conflict riddled country. This year we're getting to know students from Gaza, which I'm really excited for. I have a lot I want to ask and know about living and studying there. I'm also trying to get involved in Human Rights Club and Women's Club, which all sound RIGHT up my alley. Oh, and I also joined Hoya Leadership Pathway - which is a program to encourage and recognize leadership skills. It's based around this system of medals, so you climb in ranks from copper to bronze to silver to gold, as you engage in activities and acquire more experience. Super cool.
I think I'll leave it at that for now. Here are some picture from the past weeks!
This is the outside of the dorms! Taken at night, so pardon the quality. I can't stress this enough - we live in such amazing buildings (apparently the world's largest collection of green buildings????) and I am so blessed. Like the weird tall things in the left pictures are wind turbines! I also will show my room, but right now it's really messy hehe sorry.
Also we had a break a few weeks ago because of the muslim holiday Eid. It was really odd to start school for two weeks and then go on break for a week. It was nonetheless very welcome, of course. Mostly I relaxed, cleaned and did laundry, hung out with friends, and got caught up with work. We had a little get-together at the dorms with food to celebrate Eid, where one of the girls did henna for us (common misconception - it's not only Indian). We also went to Katara to have dinner and watch the Eid fireworks
which was a really nice night, except it being really, really, warm. We did what any reasonable person would do though and went to this super fancy dessert place where they had iPads for menus and ordered an expensive red velvet milkshake. Mona (from Yemen!) and I split one in true sisterly spirit.
Now I'm going to read Guns, Germs, and Steel for my Prosem class tomorrow. Hope everyone's good. xx
