bordeaux pt. one

Thursday, 14 November, 2019, 5:46 PM

Hey guys! After my last exam a couple of weeks ago, I had almost two weeks of well needed vacation. So last Thursday, I made my way to Schiphol and met up with my dad, who had just arrived from Stockholm. Together we took a plane to a new destination for both of us: Bordeux! Here's what our first day there looked like.

After having checked into Hotel de Seze (which I by the way can strongly recomend), we decided to just pick a direction and look for somewhere to grab some lunch.

It had been raining earlier, and would rain for a large portion of the weekend, but our first couple of hours in Bordeaux the sun was shining and sky blue. We took advantage of the weather and just walked around for a bit exploring the city.

When our stomachs finally had enough of waiting, we picked a café that looked nice and ordered a steak tartare each and bottle of wine to share. I mean, we were in Bordeux, after all. We shared a cheesecake for dessert and then hit the streets again.

Unfortunately, we had ran out of luck with the weather, so after running between a couple of shops trying to avoid getting completely soaked, we made our way back to the hotel. We spent a couple hours relaxing in our room and charging our batteries with a power nap. Since we had both been up early we needed some rest. After all, our main purpose of the trip was just to relax and spend time together, eat some good food and try some nice wines. It was so nice not to rush to see all the tourist spots or must sees, but instead just do what we felt like at the moment.

In the evening we had planned to eat at the hotel, but we decided to try out a restaurant close by instead, recomended by our taxi driver. Definitely a great decision. We had some delicious enterecote, before we walked the couple hundred meters back to our hotel and crashed on our beds, completely done for the day and excited for tomorrow's activity: a full day wine tour.

french riviera pt. 1: arriving in nice + ultimate provence

Thursday, 17 October, 2019, 7:30 AM

It's a Friday evening in July when we board the plane that will take us to Nice, France. We celebrate the upcoming adventure with a glass of champagne, and I can't tell if that is what is causing the flutters in my stomach, or if it's just pure excitement. We land quite late in the evening, roll our suitcases across the street from the aiport and check in to our hotel for the night. After a beer at the hotel bar we all fall asleep the moment our heads touch the pillows.

After a quick breakfast the next morning, we drag our heavy suitcases with us back and forth around the aiport area, trying to figure out where we can pick up the car we've rented. It takes us over half an hour and we're completely dripping of sweat when we finally find the car and blast the airco on full. It's a miracle we managed to not argue. But as soon as we hit the roads, the smiles return to our faces. We drive through beautiful landscapes, roaring hills and deep valleys, vineyard and fields.

Then we arrive at our first destination - Ultimate Provence. We get there earlier than check in, so we grab some lunch at the terrace while waiting for our rooms. I eat a salad and the others share a big plate filled with different delicious bites.

Once our lunch is finished we get our rooms and boy, were they worth the wait. They fall right into my toplist of favorite hotel rooms of all time. Not only is this whole place so tastefully decorated and modern, but it makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in the door.

Even though the rooms are amazing, so is the weather - so we switch into our swimwear and decide to lounge by the pool for a couple of hours. I put on an audiobook and fall asleep for an hour or so.

When I wake up I decide I need to do something to wake myself up a bit before it's time for dinner. I switch the swimwear for gymwear and the audiobook for some upbeat music and go for a run. The heat is making it difficult to move at all, but despite the fact that it's probably the slowest I've ever ran, I feel so freaking proud of myself when I finish.

A quick shower later, me and dad sit down and taste some of the hotel's own wine before dinner time. The red is a little light for me, but the rosé is right up my alley. When the rest of the family joins, we move outisde to enjoy the evening sun on the terrace. It's Saturday, so there's a DJ playing while we sip our cocktails and decide on what to eat. My decision lands on carbonara and it's almost as good as the ones I used to have in Rome. We spend the rest of the evening sipping on locally produced wine while the sun slowly sets. All I can think of is how grateful I am to have such an amazing family and that we're about to spend another week in France exploring a bunch of beautiful places and enjoying many more magical evenings like this one.

Hey friends! I’m currently off enjoying life to the fullest in Provence. Seeing new places, eating my own body weight in seafood and soaking up the sun. And drinking rosé like never before. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back. Until then, enjoy your summer!
