Pitkiä viikonloppuja kutsutaan espanjaksi 'silta-viikonlopuiksi', mikä tarkoittaa sitä, että keskellä viikkoa olevan juhlapyhän ansiosta muodostetaan silta viikonloppuun, ja skipataan pari arkipäivää. Näin meillä oli siis vapun aikaan, ja voi pojat miten ihanaa olikin. Pääsiäisviikkoni meni monesta kivasta tekemisestä huolimatta niin stressaantuneena, ja tällainen pidempi vapaa heti perään tuli kyllä tarpeeseen!

// In Spanish, long weekends are referred to with the word 'puente' (bridge) because due to a holiday in the middle of the week, the remaining work days are skipped by building a bridge to the weekend. This happened last week because of May Day celebrations, and I realized just how much I had needed that time off. My semana santa, despite all the nice things, was far from relaxing, and this long weekend could not have come at a better time.

Näiden muutaman päivän aikana nautin auringosta, jäätelöstä ja kulttuurista. Vaikka vappu ei tosiaan ollut täällä niin iso juttu, niin perjantaina vietettiin Día de la Cruz -nimistä pyhää, joka liittyy Jeesuken ylösnousemukseen, mutta joka toteutuu musiikin, tanssin ja hilpeän tunnelman muodossa. Eri naapurustot ja yhdistyksen olivat tehneet ympäri kaupunkia asetelmia, joissa olennaisena osana oli ruusuin koristeltu risti sekä muut perinteiset elementit, kuten keltainen omena ('pero') johon oli löyty sakset kiinni. Tämä viittasi siis siihen, että usein kun kehutaan jotain, lisätään lauseeseen kuitenkin jokin 'mutta'... Ja 'pero' tarkoittaa espanjaksi siis sekä 'mutta' sanaa että keltaista omenaa, ja sakset symboloivat sitä että kaikki epäröinnit leikataan pois. Ihan hauska juttu oli bongailla joka asetelmasta omena saksineen!

// During the past days, I have embraced the Spanish summer with its sun shine, ice cream and culture. Although May Day celebrations were not that notable here, on Friday we celebrated Día de la Cruz. It stems from the resurrection of Christ, and it's realized as a fiesta of music, dance and cheerful atmosphere. Different neighborhoods and communities build scenes across the city, and the main element is a cross decorated with red roses. Most of them include other traditional elements too, such as a small yellow apple ('pero') with scissors on top of it. This comes from the saying that whenever we talk about something nice, we have a tendency to add a 'but'.... And 'pero' means not only an apple, but also 'but' in Spanish; and the scissors are meant to illustrate how all buts and hesitations are cut off. Another really nice tradition, and it was fun to spot the apple in different scenes!

Tämän tapahtuman merkeissä kiertelimme ristiltä toiselle, aina välillä tapaksille pysähtyen. Kaupunki oli täynnä elämää ja sääkin mitä parhain! Monet naiset olivat pukeutuneet perinteisiin röyhelömekkoihin, punaisen tanssija-emojin tyyliin, ja ihmiset soittivat ja tanssivat flamencoa kaduilla. Meininki oli todella hilpeä, ja päivä olikin yksi ehdottomista lemppareistani! Laitoin myos omiin hiuksiini tavan mukaisesti ruusun ja korviin isot korvikset, ja oli kyllä kunnon espanjatar olo.

// As a part of the celebrations, me and the family walked around the city center from one cross to another, stopping for tapas every now and then. Granada was full of life, and the weather was definitely treating us! Many women were dressed in big ruffled dresses, like the red dancer emoji, and people were singing and dancing flamenco. The spirit was very cheerful and joyful, and I'll count this event among my favorite ones so far! I also wore a rose in my hair and big earrings to honor the tradition, and I felt kinda like a true Spaniard.

Muitakin kivoja juttuja sattui kuluneelle viikonlopulle, kun lauantaina vietettiin kulttuurifestivaalia jonka päätteeksi menin ulos ensimmäistä kertaa sitten uuden vuoden, ja sunnuntaina puolestaan juhlittiin äitienpäivää. Ja nyt on enää vajaa kolme viikkoa siihen että oma äiti tulee kylään, ihanaa! vaikka tämä maanantai olikin melkoinen, tällä viikonlopulla ja alkavan viikon mukanaan tuomilla jutuilla pääsee pitkälle. Nyt Game of Thrones (!!!) ja jännät päälle!

// All in all, the weekend was filled with precious things. On Saturday, there was a cultural festival and I even went out for the first time since New Year's Eve, and on Sunday we celebrated Mother's Day here in Spain. And there are less than three weeks until my mom comes to visit, I can't wait! Even though this Monday has indeed been one of those days, the past weekend and all the good things coming up this week will keep me occupied. Now Game of Thrones (omg) and excitement mode on!

Huh mikä huhtikuu. Tiedän ettei blogissaan tarvitsisi pahoitella sitä ettei ole ehtinyt päivittää, mutta pahoittelenpa silti. Melkein naurattaa katsoa tuota viimeisintä postausta ja höntsäviikkoa joka silloin oli meneillään. Viimeisin kuukausi on nimittäin ollut hektisin ikinä, varsinkin kun yleensä huhtikuussa olen tottunut lähinnä juhlimaan wappua! Tänä vuonna kuitenkin aloitin harkan kaksikielisessä koulussa (superkivaa!) ja hukuin muutamaan massiiviseen koulutyöhön (ei niin kivaa). Siinäpä se pääpiirteissään.

// What an April, let me tell you. I know you're not supposed to be apologizing about not updating your blog etc - but I'm gonna do it anyway. I'm sorry. It feels absurd reading the latest post about my laid-back week, because the latest month has been one of the most hectic ones yet. Or maybe it's just the reference point as usually I would have spent most of April partying and celebrating wappu... This year, however, I started my practice in a bilingual school (super cool) and almost drowned into a couple of massive final assignments (not so cool). That's pretty much it.

Toki huhtikuussa vietimme myös pääsiäistä, jopa viikon verran näin katolisessa maassa. Melkoinen kokemus! Semana santa on täällä Espanjassa yksi merkittävimpiä juhlapyhiä, olit sitten uskonnollinen tai et. Siihen kuuluu olennaisesti kulkueet, joissa eri veljeskunnat kantavat sellaisia lavoja, joissa on joko Jeesus tai Neitsyt Maria eri pääsiäisen kulkuun liittyvissä tilanteissa. Nämä kulkueet ovat hyvin näkyviä katukuvassa, ja saa olla melkoisen taitava jos niitä haluaa välttää; ei-uskonnolliset espanjalaiset nimittäin eivät niistä niin välitä. Minusta ne olivat kuitenkin näin ensikertalaisena todella vaikuttava ja hieno näky jollaista ei kyllä Suomessa tule vastaan, eikä juuri muualla maailmassakaan ihan hirveästi.

// One of the highlights of April was the Easter and the Holy week, which is slightly longer here, being a Catholic country. Quite an experience, let me say! Semana santa is one of the most remarkable holidays here in Spain, whether you're religious or not. Among the most relevant parts are the processions, where different brotherhoods carry these stages where a figure of Christ or Virgin Mary in different scenes from the Easter events. These processions are really notable in the city landscape, and you have to be really smart to not come across a single one of them; in fact, many non-religious Spaniards don't really care for them. However, I found them really impressive and beautiful, and it's something you don't really come across in Finland, and not even in many places in the whole world.

Ei kannata säikähtää kuvissa näkyviä huppuhahmoja, sillä ne eivät mitenkään liity Amerikassa jyllänneeseen KKK-liikkeeseen. Nämä huput liittyvät siihen, että kulkueessa ollaan mukana oman itsensä takia eikä muiden tarvitse nähdä kuka hupun alla on kantamassa kynttilää tai muuta symbolia. Vaikka myönnän, että valmistautumisestani huolimatta olivat nämä asut aikamoinen näky ensimmäisellä kerralla!

Muita hauskoja pääsiäisen perinteitä olivat muun muassa "hyvin perinteiset etelän herkut" rosco -nimiset leivonnaiset, jotka olivatkin sitten rinkelimunkkeja. Ihan hauskaa, kun A hehkutti miten paljon tulen niistä tykkäämään, nämä on niin perinteisiä täällä etelässä, jne. Ja sitten ne olivatkin melkein samoja munkkeja, joita meillä Suomessa syödään vappuna :D Jotain erilaista koostumuksessa oli, mutta perinteistä paistplinjastoa myöten tuttua hommaa loppusissaan.

// Don't be frightened by the hooded figures with their pointy hats, because they have nothing to do with the KKK movement in the US. For what I understood, these hoods are related to the fact that the people underneath are in the processions for themselves and that they don't need to be seen by anyone else. Although I must admit that even though I knew what was coming, it was still quite a sight for a first-timer!

Other fun traditions were for example roscos, which turned out to be fried donuts. It was funny how excited A was when he was telling me about how much I'm gonna love these traditional Easter treats from the South - and then they ended up being the same donuts we eat in Finland during vappu :D There was something different in the consistency, but essentially it was the same thing.

Toukokuu onkin alkanut sitten ihan hyvissä merkeissä. Vappu oli täälläkin vapaa, ja meni kyllä edellisistä vuosista poiketen hyvissä voimissa (Yleensä olen vain nukkunut koko päivän kahden viikon juhlintojen jälkeen). Pienoinen nostalgia kieltämättä iski kaikkien wappuhulinoita seuratessa, mutta ainakin on tullut aikoinaan otettua kaikki irti mikä vain silloin lähti. Nyt menin tiistaina eli vappuaattona yhdeltätoista nukkumaan, sillä takana oli uittojen ja piknikien sijaan erityispitkä työ- ja opiskelupäivä. Hyvä paine ja niin edelleen.

II On the contrast, May had a pretty good start. We also had 1st of May off, and unlike many previous years, I was in a really good and bright mood (usually I have just slept the whole day after two weeks of partying). I felt a little nostalgic watching everyone's wappu updates, but at least I know I definitely took everything I could from my students years. This year, I went to bed at eleven after a long day of work and studies instead of picnics and sparkling wine. The good kind pf pressure etc.

Kuulumisia ja ajatuksenvirtaa - I'm back! Ensi kerralla sitten jotain järkevämpää esim Game of Thronesista, temppareista tai uusien bikinien metsästyksestä. Tai vaikka siitä, että kesä on ihan aikuisten oikeasti nyt täällä, vaikka kuvissa Malagan reissulla olinkin neule päällä (rento neule + midi-hame kombo nyt vain on lyömätön yhdistelmä). Me gusta.

// Catching up, flow of thoughts - I'm back! Next time I will write something really rational about Game of Thrones, Temptation Island or the hunt for a new bikini. Or about the fact that Summer is actually - like for real - here, even though in the outfit pictures from Malaga I was wearing a sweater (I love the combination of relaxed sweaters and midi skirts).
