This week's message: To Serve.
Out of all billion words to choose between I felt that I had to write about this one; to serve. I believe this is a subject that needs to be highlighted due to the "selfish" age and days we currently live in. Where do you draw the line between taking care of yourself and being selfish? It's a fine line. During the latest years society have more and more started to talk about the importance of taking care of ourselves, that we need to value our own needs primary. I agree on that. I agree with the fact that we need to see the value and importance of taking care of ourselves, in whatever forms that may include. Thus I believe it has gone too far whereas people are using the idea of taking care of themselves as an excuse of being lazy and selfish. If you want to read my text about laziness you can CLICK HERE. I think we all have heard that "hate" is a very strong word and should therefor not be used. But I HATE laziness. AHH. Really. Laziness is just a decision based on selfishness and it adds absolutely nothing to our life. However, we need to see the difference between resting and laziness. The same action could be motivated by two different sources. Chilling in the sofa in front of a movie or series is a good example. It can either be done from the perspective of relaxing, to wind down or it can be done from the perspective of laziness which means we don't have the energy to make that effort of doing things that we actually should do. Do you see the difference? One thing is based on the statement of taking care of yourself and the other from selfishness. Back to the subject. To serve. To serve others.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SERVE?
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
- Mark 10:45
To serve is to give/do something for someone else. I believe there are many other synonyms that could be used for that description. Words that are more common in the everyday language. The particular "word" serve is a pretty "churchy" word and what I actually mean is that the word serve is mostly common in the context of "Christianity" and "Church". However do I strongly believe that serving others is something for EVERYONE despite the fact if you've never put a foot into a Christian community or if you are having an unshakable relationship with God. We need to widen our perspective and understand the core of what serving is. Serving is to give. Serving is to put someone else before ourselves and act upon that. To serve is to stand in a vision bigger than myself. It's to pour out our hearts to others and showing the love of God. Because that is the pure foundation serving should be about - Spreading God's UNFAILING love to this world. It is more needed than ever. But read this carefully now; the core is about serving our God, and to serve God is to spread his love among the nation and a way of doing this is to love the people around us and in other words, serving them. I think many people get this twisted and see it backwards. We serve others because we want to be loved and appreciated by people, and when we have that as a starting point it's about putting ourselves in the center of attention and not giving God the glory. It then becomes an act of selfishness and not an act of spreading God's love which further on results in doing things that only comforts us and our needs. THIS IS A PROBLEM. From my perspective is this a major problem in our society nowadays as people are not willing to give unless it's beneficial for themselves. As soon as a tiny bit of that extra effort is required people bang out and quit. We need to start looking up from our own feet and see the bigger picture. No, some things are not always funny, although, it will give you something. It produces life. Characteristics are being built. It's about getting out of our own narrow way and be a servant and love other humans.
Why we should put Him above all else in our life is another message that we can talk about another time. But wow, I am just saying, when you decide to leave your old life behind and fully commit to let Him lead you - your life will forever be changed & you will experience peace, comfort & satisfaction as you've never done before.
"We love because he first loved us."
- 1 John 4:19
There are numbers of different ways HOW to serve. Big as Small. Remember, serving is about loving your neighbor and facing their needs. I think we tend to visionary too big sometimes in the context of serving and helping others. If you are a big visioner, you should not stop with that nevertheless do not forget the small, everyday actions. Make the dishes. Bring the trash. Take responsibility in your local church. Volunteering. Do something that's not for the sake of money but rather for the sake of helping humans. Work with kids. Sow into someone's life. A word could be a seed. A simple word could be a seed strong enough to one day become a beautiful flower.
"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously."
- 2 Corinthians 9:6
I want to leave you with this finishing Bible Verse;
"Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people."
- Ephesians 6:7
Sincerely yours, Hanna
