Shadow and bone (2021-) series review - I am, as excited and overjoyed as everyone else!

Films and shows

Archie Renaux spiller Malyen Oretsev.

- Hvilken gylden trio!

🇬🇧// OKAY, THIS IS NOT A DRILL – I watched Shadow and Bone (2021-), and
I actually loved it?! I know many people have been very excited about this series since it was announced. But I know myself well enough to not get excited about adaptations buuut here I am, as excited and overjoyed as everyone else!
This will be a SPOILER review of season one (You can read the plot summary but you should stop after that! - The spoilers are semi mild for both the books and the series)
I will generally not be comparing it too much to the books until the end, where I’ll have a section for those interested in the comparison – So let’s get started!

Plot summary
Based on Leigh Bardugo's worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone and Six of crows, we start off in a war-torn world where a lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive. (Source: Rottentomatoes)

The characters
First of all, I will say that all the actors and actresses portrayed their charters so well, I was always right there with them! This brings me to the way Jessie Mei Li portrayed Alina Starkov, which was so captivating and badass! We saw how she went from frightened to better understand what it meant to have her powers!
Archie Renaux played Malyen Oretsev. I loved that we followed him even when he wasn't with Alina because it gave the audience so much more of his story and the heartbreak he goes through and thereby such a good understanding of his character.
Ben Barnes plays General Kirigan/The Darkling and he did it to a T! Barnes was made for a role like this, and it made me think of the Dorian Grey movie (2009) that he plays in (and which I loved!).
I liked that The Darkling was made to be both this inhumane monster and vulnerable and that we as the audience couldn't tell when he was acting or being sincere. Those eyes of Ben Barnes were so filled with expressions - Such good acting!

The crows were played by Freddy Carter as
Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa and Kit Young as Jesper Fahey. - What a golden trio, especially on screen!! Their adventures, the heist and their plans, and change of plans, so well crafted by the writers of the show.
The way that Brekker not even once made as to touch anyone not even when they were injured made me happy, especially because we haven't gotten any of his story yet, apart from the fact that he hates Pekka Rollins. It will make it so much better when we get to know the why of his character.
Inej and the way her faith in the Saints play a big role in her character was also so nice to see on screen. I was also so well crafted, her inner fight between wanting to protect her friends and her not wanting to kill anyone because of her beliefs.
Jasper is the one and only, that made me laugh during this show, he was the comic relief even though we already know quite a lot of his gambling addiction, which adds to the good storytelling. It will be interesting to see how it plays out when it strains his and Brekkers relationship even more.

Danielle Galligan plays
Nina Zenik and Calahan Skogman plays Matthias Helvar who are both just the best! Okay, so I lied Zenik and Helvar also made me laugh with their bickering! It was just sooo good!
The turn in their feelings towards each other turned a little bit too quick for me, would have been nice to see one or two normal conversations as well BUT I know that there is a limited screen time so I'm happy with what I got!! Truly the scene with the wet clothes is one I could watch on repeat! I also can't wait to watch Nina kick some more ass because she is queen!

Daisy Head plays
Genya Safin and Sujaya Dasgupta plays Zoya Nazyalensky and they are both characters I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more of as their stories unfold - So far so very good!!

Jeg elskede, at Jasper havde noget ”no strings attached”-sex!?

🇬🇧 // My thoughts on the plot
I must say that even though I felt that all the actors did their characters justice, I felt that the timeline was too quick. I’m not saying that it would have survived being Game of Thrones (2011-2019) slow, but I would have liked to explore every place we were more. Especially as we got deeper into the story. I understand that from a Netflix point of view, they needed new viewers to be entertained, but for me, it took away a tiny bit of the seriousness of the show. I wasn’t with the characters long enough to truly comprehend where they were mentally. With that said, I’m still very happily surprised by how dark and true it actually was! And the underlying emotions! The exploring would also have been nice because the set was so beautiful, and to have seen more of that, would have given it a greater feel.

I loved that Jasper had himself some casual sex!?
And on top of that, I also loved that none of the other love interests was forced! So very nice. (Even though you know my feelings on Nina and Mattias) It will also just make it so much better when we start to see some romantic feelings between the characters in season two (hopefully), and make it so much more believable.
The relationship between Alina and General Kirigan could have been a little bit slower as I also said with Nina and Mattias, but it didn't feel forced, it just didn't have as much time as could have been preferred! But It felt real - To have someone show interest, someone who is in power, and knows his way around the place you've just been put. It could happen for even the best of us!

Books to series – My thoughts
The way the creators of the series ended up putting the Shadow and Bone and Six of crow books together was really good! – It was the thing that truly kept me from being too excited about the show before watching it because, in my mind, there were so many ways it could go wrong! But they really did do a fantastic job of it!
But, and these are only thoughts, I would not have minded the crows not having their debut until the middle of the series or a couple of episodes in. Because back to a point I made earlier, for me, the show was too fast-paced. So, if they had waited with bringing the crows in, we could have gotten more scenery shots and a closer look at the little palace. And then only have had the crows at Ketterdam and gotten to know them there, in their home. This is a preference, and I understand the need to get the story going and not having the budget for gigantic sets, both at the Little palace and Ketterdam! I also understand the need to really intermingle the storylines, so again, the creators did do a really good job of it!

That they have Brekker say that he needs Inej in the last episode was both so great, but it did feel like a statement made too early
- To already get a feel of Kaz's feelings just did not feel right. But it also depends on how the creators of the series are going forward with the crows' storyline.
This brings me to a point that truly makes me angry at my self, but I feel that they got Kaz a little wrong, or maybe just right, and I’m just being a baby?! – Who knows, but I felt he was way too expressional in his face. In my mind, he almost always wears a mask of cold boredom, which he does not do in the show. This is not to say that Freddy is not a great actor because he is! – It is just very clear that my version of Kaz Brekker is quite different to the one that the show creators wanted.

So, all in all, I'm happy and very intrigued to see where they go from here!
