6 romantic contemporary novels that will get us through lookdown!

Books

Red, White & Royal Blue

With the Fire on High (2019) af Elizabeth Acevedo
(Kilde: Goodreads)

With the Fire on High var en dejlig og hyggelig bog, uden unødvendigt drama.

Only Mostly Devastated (2020) af Sophie Gonzales

Ayesha at Last (2019) af Uzma Jalaluddin

Red, White & Royal Blue (2019) by Casey McQuiston

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the prince. (Source: Goodreads)

This book had me grinning like an idiot for the first 3 hours of reading it - I couldn't wipe it off! There was also some drama/intrigues which had me on the edge of my seat (as much as a book can when you know it ends well ;)) but then again, it also made me cry, so let that be proof that you will cry just as well as you'll laugh!
There is also a lot of sexy times in this book. It kind of reminds me of reading smut on Tumblr in my teen days, and to be truthful I’m here for it haha.

With the Fire on High (2019) by Elizabeth Acevedo
With her daughter to care for and her Abuela to help support her, high school senior Emoni Santiago has to make the tough decisions, and do what must be done. The one place she can let her responsibilities go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness.
Still, she knows she doesn’t have enough time for her school’s new culinary arts class, doesn’t have the money for the class’s trip to Spain - and shouldn’t still be dreaming of someday working in a real kitchen. But even with all the rules she has for her life, and all the rules everyone expects her to play by - once Emoni starts cooking, her only real choice is to let her talent break free. (Source: Goodreads)

This was a nice and chill book without any unnecessary drama. It was also just so sweet and it showed what good human decency can look like! Our main character Emoni was such a baaadaaas, and I was rooting for her, from the first page!

Tweet Cute (2020) by Emma Lord
Meet Pepper, swim team captain, chronic overachiever, and all-around perfectionist. Her family may be falling apart, but their massive fast-food chain is booming ― mainly thanks to Pepper, who is barely managing to juggle real life while secretly running Big League Burger’s massive Twitter account.
Enter Jack, class clown and a constant thorn in Pepper’s side. When he isn’t trying to duck out of his obscenely popular twin’s shadow, he’s busy working in his family’s deli. His relationship with the business that holds his future might be love/hate, but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe, he’ll do whatever it takes to take them down, one tweet at a time.
All’s fair in love and cheese - that is, until Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war. Little do they know, while they’re publicly duking it out with snarky memes and retweet battles, they’re also falling for each other in real life - on an anonymous chat app Jack built. (Source: Goodreads)

This was so daaaarn cute! Like smol cute teenagers! And let's talk about all that food and cake, I just want to try all the recipes! What I also liked about this was the confrontations, they were all very real and hurt more than I had expected, especially compared to how cute the rest of the book was!

Only Mostly Devastated (2020) by Sophie Gonzales
Will Tavares is the dream summer fling―he's fun, affectionate, kind―but just when Ollie thinks he's found his Happily Ever After, summer vacation ends and Will stops texting Ollie back. Now Ollie is one prince short of his fairy tale ending, and to complicate the fairy tale further, a family emergency sees Ollie uprooted and enrolled at a new school across the country. Which he minds a little less when he realizes it's the same school Will goes to...except Ollie finds that the sweet, comfortably queer guy he knew from summer isn't the same one attending Collinswood High. This Will is a class clown, closeted―and, to be honest, a bit of a jerk.
Ollie has no intention of pining after a guy who clearly isn't ready for a relationship, especially since this new, bro-y jock version of Will seems to go from hot to cold every other week. But then Will starts "coincidentally" popping up in every area of Ollie's life, from music class to the lunch table, and Ollie finds his resolve weakening.. (Source: Goodreads)

This is sweet, hurting and lovable, and it's a YA contemporary novel to its core! This is just one of those books where you have a smile on your face and then BAM, sad parts, and you're crying and everything hurts ... Okay so yeah, it makes you hurt (and laugh), but for all the right reasons!

99 Percent Mine (2019) by Sally Thorne
Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty - ever since she’s had to learn to settle for good enough.
When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade. (Source: Goodreads)

This was cute, sexy and almost fanfiction like in the best way possible and just very well written! Argh, all the good things you can ask for when it comes to a modern romance! PLUS renovating a house is a dream of mine, I just LOVE it!

Ayesha at Last (2019) by Uzma Jalaluddin
Ayesha Shamsi has a lot going on. Her dreams of being a poet have been set aside for a teaching job so she can pay off her debts to her wealthy uncle. She lives with her boisterous Muslim family and is always being reminded that her flighty younger cousin, Hafsa, is close to rejecting her one hundredth marriage proposal. Though Ayesha is lonely, she doesn't want an arranged marriage.
Then she meets Khalid, who is just as smart and handsome as he is conservative and judgmental. She is irritatingly attracted to someone who looks down on her choices and who dresses as he belongs in the seventh century. (Source: Goodreads)

I really loved this story - it was real, funny and sweet! I also liked that we followed the story from multiple perspectives and really got to know and understand the different characters!
