TULIP DAY IN SWEDEN

Inspiration, flowers, Nature, swedish traditions, gardening

Today -January 15th- we honour the tulips. These wonderful and strong flowers were cultivated since the 17 th century in Sweden and it was exactly here in Uppsala where it happened first. Olof Rudbeck d.ä. planted "Tulipa sylvestris" on the grounds of the Uppsala Botanical Garden.

The Swedish farmers grow more than 160 million tulips every year and the Swedes are champions in buying them! The best-selling flowers!

In order to last longer, keep them with their original wrapping from the florist and cut their stems one centimeter before placing them in a vase with fresh and cold water.

Hope you enjoy some tulips today at home.

SUNNY SUNDAY AT STABBY PRÄSTGÅRD

Inspiration, Fashion, Nature, art & crafts, flowers

These are the surprises the Swedish weather gives you. After a dark, rainy and messy Saturday, the sun came out and no cloud was seen in the Uppsala skies. Weather -as you well know- is an issue of utmost importance here.

I had proposed at Stabby Gården to show my floral collages born during this year´s self-quarantine , while trying to avoid Corona. I called them and a week before Sunday 13th of this month they returned my call to tell me that I could show my series of collages that Sunday. So lucky me!! Quite stressy, but worth trying it.

You cannot imagine the nice people that came by, took the last coffee with "kanelbulle" from the summer season at Stabby Café and at the same time enjoyed my exhibition.

Here I am posting a few pics from that date and you can see how loveable the place is! Among other personalities, this was the former home of Nathan Söderblom, Archbishop of the Swedish Church in Uppsala during the beginning of the XXth century and Nobel Peace Prize in 1930. He lived in this house with his family from 1901 until 1912.

When you do something from the heart, succeess is guaranteed. I am fond of the Swedish flora and a warm follower of Carl von Linné and all his works. They were my inspiration for this exhibition.

ROSE DAY in SWEDEN

Inspiration, Nature, weddings, flowers, gardening

July 2 is ROSE DAY in Sweden. The name "Rosa" has been used here since the end of the XVIII century, though today it´s rare to find a small girl with this name.

Roses are one of the most female symbols in almost every culture. If you love roses or have some growing in your garden, you will understand the reason why: they are beautiful, they smell perfume, they are delicate but strong enough (remember they have thorns to defend themselves), they are usually used for the bride´s bouquet and they mean love too. They are complete in everything like we women are.

Yesterday I attended an introduction to the Old Roses´ World at the Botanical Gardens in Uppsala. We were a small group (because of the damned Corona!) at the Baroque garden where the oldest rose bushes are kept. From there you have a wonderful view of both the Uppsala Castle (Slottet) and the BlåsenHus from the University (so lucky them; such a view they have from there every day!)

Gunilla Uhlin Friberg guided us through this complicated -I mean really complicated- rose world. Gunilla has a long experience in roses and she has a garden full of them at her Upland home. She is a "rosgalning" (mad about roses). If you start taking care of roses, you shall never come to an end, ´cause it´s an immense world and needs hard work too.

Did you know that the first roses come from the Middle East and Asia? The oldest ones are white, soft pink and pink and the red and yellow roses are originally Chinese. All the original old roses smell more than those hybrids we buy at the flower shops. The hybrids stay longer, but they do not smell.
