4 favorite Italian drinks

Sunday, 17 May, 2020, 12:36 PM

As you've all seen we've had both Greek and Indian dinner, so it's about time we take the food travels to Italy for some pasta and a few Italian drinks.

As we were planning our menu for the night we kind of stumbled upon the idea of making cocktails in Italian fashion, and who am I to say no to a great idea huh? So cocktails it is! Keep in mind though when you're reading this, we're not always keeping the original recipes, due to the simple facts that our little bar at home did not have all the ingredients.

Aperol Spritz

So let's start off with a fun fact, did you know that the drink's also called Spritz Veneziano because the drink has its roots in Venice. I actually had my Aperol Spritz in Venice, sitting at an outdoor terrace overlooking the canals. That was not bad, I'll tell you that much.

But let's stick to the actual topic and skip right to how I made my Spritz. There are lots and lots of versions of how to make one, but this is how I like mine:

- White wine
- Aperol
- Sparkling water
- Ice cubes
- A few slices of Orange

Bellini

Believe it or not, but this drink has its origin in Venice as well. It was first introduced there in 1940, so it's safe to say that this one stood its ground. If you ask me, I would say that its kind of a spin-off on Mimosa, which is orange juice and champagne - and not a favorite of mine. This one though is on the sweeter side, so I kind of like it.

- Peach juice or peaches to press for ren (the later is preferred)
- Prosecco or Sparkling wine
- Ice
- Peach slices for decorations

The Hugo

This is such a fresh and summery drink, with its key ingredients Mint and Elderberries, that grows quite quickly in the northern parts of Italy called the Dolomites. But don't be alarmed, it's totally drinkable during the colder seasons as well, just switch out the ice and add a warm blanket.

- Elderberry juice.
- Sparkling white wine or Prosecco.
- Lemon Juice.
- Mint leaves.
- Ice cubes.
- Lemon or lime for decorations.

Spiked Affogato

If you are searching for a recipe for this drink, there is a wild variety of it, and I am sure that you can make it in several ways that will make it just to your liking. If I eat a dessert, which I usually don't if it's not cheese, a Spiked Affogato would be it for me. Some might not even call it neither a cocktail nor a dessert, but an Italian ice cream treat. Originally it's said to be spiked with a liqueur called Amaretto, so that's what we used, but it's said to be just as tasty with whiskey or Baileys.

- Amaretto
- Hot coffee, preferably espresso.
- Vanilla Gelato.
- coffee beans or cacao to garnish with.

This may just be the easiest drink to make. Get your glass out, preferably a short and shallow one. Scoop a big ball, or two, of that vanilla ice cream in the glass. Pour the Baileys and a splash of whiskey on top of the ice cream, do the same with the espresso. Add the beans and Buon appetito!

So we do hope that this post will give you some inspiration on how to spend your quarantine time, reading a lot of amazing recipes for cocktails, not drinking them, and getting intoxicated of course. After all, stay home and stay safe!

Italy - Venice

Santa Lucia

Thursday, 13 December, 2018, 5:52 AM

This church in Venice Italy is a well known because of the grave of Santa Lucia di Siracusa, who is celebrated on December 13th. We kind of stumbled upon it when we took our trip to Venice, crossing the square and almost missing it.

Beautiful right?

Experiencing Venice for the first time

Wednesday, 12 September, 2018, 6:08 AM

As you can see this trip was some time ago, but I thought I would share some of my experience anyways. Italy has always been a dream of mine, so of course, I wanted to go to Venice and see this romantic and beautiful city in person.

We actually lived about twenty minutes away from Venice, so we traveled by bus every day from a smaller town called Treviso. That's my advice of the day if you're going to Venice, live in Treviso. It's close to the airport, the town is really cute and the local bus works just fine. And to be honest, there are some cute restaurants in Treviso as well, just located by the canals, so don't miss out on that. I would recommend that you take some extra time to explore this next door cutie.

The food in Venice was amazing, and to get the most of the cuisine we decided to share just an appetizer or a main dish in every restaurant we sat down in. I loved it. The seafood, the plates of pasta, the wines. Mhm! Did I mention the pasta? Well yeah, you all know my love for pasta, but combine seafood, pasta, and wine, and I am in heaven for sure.

Going on a ride in a gondola was really really expensive. So we didn't. But that's the one thing a do regret from our visit to Venice. I will probably never return to Venice again, seeing as it's a town that's good for about one, one and a half days. So I should have taken a ride in a gondola, just to have the memory. But I was stupidly stingy and decided not to...

Let's skip to the architecture. Amazing buildings, bridges, churches. All beautiful. But our biggest problem was that there were street signs about every three blocks, so we got lost all of the time. The narrow alleyways, small streets, and the really tall buildings make it hard to navigate when you can't make out the direction. Buy a map.

So you will probably get lost in the city as we did. Several times. But isn't that one of the great things about experiencing a new place, getting lost and finding something totally unexpected. I know we did. We found that little square that was hidden away, where the locals dined, and the kids played on the small courtyard in front of the school. So we stayed for a while, had some food and wine, and just enjoyed ourselves whilst people-watching. It was amazing. I loved getting lost in Venice, that's one of my best memories from our weekend in the romanticized city of Italy.

And remember to buy a ticket for the boat bus, you cant buy them on the boat, only at the bus station which is just at the beginning of the city. We actually walked the entire city, and at the end when we wanted to take the boat bus to get back, we couldn't, so that was a bummer.

If you go to Venice, it's not like in the Disney movie Lady and the Tramp. It's cute alright and we had a good weekend, but it's not what it's cracked up to be. But as I said in the beginning, it was a while ago that we visited Venice, so to be fair - nowadays I do my research. I have a hard time thinking that I would have found my self in the same situations, of not having a ticket for example. But for the record, I am glad I have seen Venice and I would love to go back and explore Italy some more.
