Today I began My Au Pair Courses. The idea was that I was just going to start and see what it was all about, but I ended sitting for 5 hours and finished all the tasks. Can honestly say I've never studied so much in my entire life.
It was very boring in the beginning, there was so much to read and to remember. But when I had completed two of the courses, I received a message from the mother in my host family, and it was just the message you needed after sitting down for so long, also got a cute picture of the two youngest children. So I sat and wrote with her for the rest of the time while continuing on with the courses, which made the time to just fly.
My Au Pair Courses are divided into 4 different courses that contain different topics related to children.
COURSE 1: AMERICAN FOOD AND CHILDHOOD NUTRITION.
In this course we get to learn about food in America and the impact it has on culture and family. There are major differences between the food we will eat in the USA and food we are used to at home. Your body will notice a change and it will take a while to adjust to a different diet and a new way of eating. For example, changes in diet and food can mean you feel tired. Almost everything about food is different in the USA. Give yourself some time to get used to things. Stay open to this change; experiencing new things is part of the fun.
Planning and preparing meals will be a major part of your responsibilities as an au pair, so you will need to understand healthy food options for kids. Your host family may have strict rules about what your host children should eat. And since thinking of new ideas for mealtime can be difficult.
COURSE 2: HEALTH IN THE HOME AND A GUIDE TO COMMON CHILDHOOD ILLNESSES.
In this course we learn a lot about health, both our own and the children’s. You learn how to detect early if your host child is getting sick, or if he / she does not behave like he / she usually does. Which diseases are normal for different ages.
We also learn how to handle situations with sick children of different ages.
COURSE 3: RAISING CHILDREN IN THE USA.
In this course we get the chance to take a look at the way American children are raised. We will become familiar with behavior challenges and we will get introduced to common behavior management strategies that can help you handle difficult situations.
At the Cultural Care Au Pair Training School in New York you will deepen your knowledge using real au pair life scenarios.
COURSE 4: THE STAGES OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT.
In this course we will learn about developmental milestones of children. A developmental milestone is when a child learns a certain skill. As children get older, they are able to do more complex things using different skills. When we know what the developmental milestones are, and when a child usually reaches them, we will be able to help our host children succeed and progress.
