Martin Luther (/ˈluːθər/German: [ˈmaɐ̯tiːn ˈlʊtɐ]; 10 November 1483 – 18 February 1546), O.S.A., was a German professor oftheology, composer, priest, monk and a seminal figure in theProtestant Reformation.

Luther came to reject several teachings and practices of theRoman Catholic Church. He strongly disputed his understanding of the Catholic view on indulgences, that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy ofindulgences in his Ninety-five Theses of 1517. His refusal to renounce all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the Pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor.

Luther taught that salvation and, subsequently, eternal life are not earned by good deeds but are received only as the free gift of God's grace through the believer's faith in Jesus Christ as redeemer from sin. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope by teaching that the Bible is the only source ofdivinely revealed knowledge from God and opposedsacerdotalism by considering all baptized Christians to be a holy priesthood. Those who identify with these, and all of Luther's wider teachings, are called Lutherans, though Luther insisted onChristian or Evangelical as the only acceptable names for individuals who professed Christ.

His translation of the Bible into the vernacular (instead of Latin) made it more accessible to the laity, an event that had a tremendous impact on both the church and German culture. It fostered the development of a standard version of the German language, added several principles to the art of translation, and influenced the writing of an English translation, the Tyndale Bible.[6] His hymns influenced the development of singing in Protestant churches.[7] His marriage to Katharina von Bora, a former nun, set a model for the practice of clerical marriage, allowing Protestant clergy to marry.

In two of his later works, Luther expressed antagonistic views towards Jews, writing that Jewish homes and synagogues should be destroyed, their money confiscated, and liberty curtailed. Condemned by virtually every Lutheran denomination, these statements and their influence on antisemitism have contributed to his controversial status.

Early life

Birth and education

Martin Luther was born to Hans Luder (or Ludher, later Luther)and his wife Margarethe (née Lindemann) on 10 November 1483 inEisleben, Saxony, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He was baptized as a Catholic the next morning on the feast day of St. Martin of Tours. His family moved to Mansfeld in 1484, where his father was a leaseholder of copper mines and smelters and served as one of four citizen representatives on the local council. The religious scholar Martin Marty describes Luther's mother as a hard-working woman of "trading-class stock and middling means" and notes that Luther's enemies later wrongly described her as a whore and bath attendant. He had several brothers and sisters, and is known to have been close to one of them, Jacob. Hans Luther was ambitious for himself and his family, and he was determined to see Martin, his eldest son, become a lawyer. He sent Martin to Latin schools in Mansfeld, then Magdeburg in 1497, where he attended a school operated by a lay group called the Brethren of the Common Life, and Eisenachin 1498. The three schools focused on the so-called "trivium": grammar, rhetoric, and logic. Luther later compared his education there to purgatory and hell.

In 1501, at the age of 19, he entered the University of Erfurt, which he later described as a beerhouse and whorehouse He was made to wake at four every morning for what has been described as "a day of rote learning and often wearying spiritual exercises." He received his master's degree in 1505.

In accordance with his father's wishes, Luther enrolled in law school at the same university that year but dropped out almost immediately, believing that law represented uncertainty.[16] Luther sought assurances about life and was drawn to theology and philosophy, expressing particular interest in Aristotle, William of Ockham, and Gabriel Biel.[16] He was deeply influenced by two tutors, Bartholomaeus Arnoldi von Usingen and Jodocus Trutfetter, who taught him to be suspicious of even the greatest thinkers[16]and to test everything himself by experience.[17] Philosophy proved to be unsatisfying, offering assurance about the use of reason but none about loving God, which to Luther was more important. Reason could not lead men to God, he felt, and he thereafter developed a love-hate relationship with Aristotle over the latter's emphasis on reason.[17] For Luther, reason could be used to question men and institutions, but not God. Human beings could learn about God only through divine revelation, he believed, andScripture therefore became increasingly important to him.[17]

He later attributed his decision to an event: on 2 July 1505, he was returning to university on horseback after a trip home. During a thunderstorm, a lightning bolt struck near him. Later telling his father he was terrified of death and divine judgment, he cried out, "Help! Saint Anna, I will become a monk!" He came to view his cry for help as a vow he could never break. He left law school, sold his books, and entered a closed Augustinian cloister in Erfurt on 17 July 1505. One friend blamed the decision on Luther's sadness over the deaths of two friends. Luther himself seemed saddened by the move. Those who attended a farewell supper walked him to the door of the Black Cloister. "This day you see me, and then, not ever again," he said. His father was furious over what he saw as a waste of Luther's education.

Early and academic LIFE

Luther dedicated himself to the Augustinian order, devoting himself to fasting, long hours in prayerpilgrimage, and frequentconfession.[22] Luther described this period of his life as one of deep spiritual despair. He said, "I lost touch with Christ the Savior and Comforter, and made of him the jailer and hangman of my poor soul."[23] Johann von Staupitz, his superior, pointed Luther's mind away from continual reflection upon his sins toward the merits of Christ. He taught that true repentance does not involve self-inflicted penances and punishments but rather a change of heart.[24]

In 1507, he was ordained to the priesthood, and in 1508, von Staupitz, first dean of the newly founded University of Wittenberg, sent for Luther, to teach theology.[25][26] He received a bachelor's degree in Biblical studies on 9 March 1508, and another bachelor's degree in the Sentences by Peter Lombard in 1509.[27]

On 19 October 1512, he was awarded his Doctor of Theology and, on 21 October 1512, was received into the senate of the theological faculty of the University of Wittenberg,[28] having succeeded Staupitz as chair of theology.[29] He spent the rest of his career in this position at the University of Wittenberg.

He was made provincial vicar of Saxony and Thuringia by his religious order in 1515. This meant he was to visit and oversee each of eleven monasteries in his province.[30]

How Jesus Christ changed the life

It’s a question for many people about The way which Jesus used to change the life of the people . if we study the bible we will notice the main points which I can say consist the structure of Jesus teaching. The points that shows how Son of the Lord taught people and by sacrificing himself proved that principals .

Let’s see this matter from the students view in a high school. When the children start to go to school ,then their teacher is the first person who they are during the day engaged with . they see their teacher and this character will be the focus of their attentions. Teacher is such attractive to them that many of them follow him. What the teacher says and what the teacher does has a big amount of importance for them . if the teacher teaches them the wrongs thoughts then they will learn it and use it in their daily communications . I give you an example I had in my own life. My cousin is 7 years old. He came back from school and directly went to his mother and kissed her. I asked his mother , Does he always coming back from school kiss you ? No. It was the first time , she answered. Then I asked him how this happens today and he said , our teacher today said to all of us coming back home we have to kiss our moms,

It’s the effect of teaching that remains in our brain in all our life. On the other hand a teacher can also have a negative role in children’s mind and life.

Suppose a teacher that has different problems in private life and with much anger or depressions or even with aggressive mood comes to school and start the class. Surely the way that this teacher controls the class and teaches could not have an instructive effect on students learning and mind. You can see the effect of such class even in students soul. Anger ,depression , lack of motivation or even much more worse .

Now , we see how a teacher can put such an important effect on students , then comparing with prophets and religious characters which their thoughts and teachings remains in history its nothing.

The prophets deal with millions of people during the history even after them their thoughts remain. So how much destructive is if the wrong ideas stay in mind of people .

Why Jesus

Let’s have a look at John 1

Before anything else existed , there was Christ , with God. He has always been alive and is himself God. He created everything there is – nothing exists that he didn’t make. Eternal life is in him, and this life gives light to all mankind . His life is the light that shines through the darkness – and the darkness can never extinguish it.

Just among the verses you can see many important points which indicates the rightness of the lord. When it says eternal life is in him it means in believing Jesus nobody dies because in him is the life .let’s see some points from the above mentioned verses:

Before anything else existed , there was Christ:

Many people see Jesus as a Prophet of God. But according to the verses above Jesus has been eternal. He is a part of our Lord and is not separated from the Lord. When it says he has been here from the beginning it means he is God. A God who lived among us to pave our way to kingdom heaven again. As you see in old testament in the beginning we were living by our father in the sky. We enjoyed a luxurious life by him . no problem , no pain and no sickness and death . but what made us to lose such comfort and leaving this life and coming down the sky ?

Here you see our relation with our kind father is destroyed because of following the temptations of Satan. We ate the forbidden fruit and lost everything . But our dear father in sky never forgot us. He sent us his dear Son among us to show us again the right way and build the connective bridge again between us and our father in sky. So , you see We were never far from the Lord. Even after living down the land our father comes down and tries to take us back again to Kingdom of heaven.

Eternal life is in him

The matter of eternal life has always been one of the most wished desires of human kind. Human lives for a certain period of time and then dies. Many people die when they are young and many die when they are old. Even children are not excepted. Surely death is not something ideal for human. We like to live long and enjoy the life. But is it possible to live eternally?

As it says Jesus is the only one who we can find the eternal life in him. When we follow him then we reconcile with our father in the sky and will be again capable to live forever. The plan of Lord was for us in the start the same. But we caused to lose it and came down in miserable life by following the Satan. The plan is to follow Our kind father again and have a part in the kingdom of heaven .

His life is the light that shines through the darkness

To know this matter well let’s see the word ,Darkness , in a better way. If we ask people if they like darkness , surely, many of them will answer , Never.

But why we don’t like the darkness situation. When you study the history of the past people they had many problems in it. There is no light and you can see nothing . you may fall in a hole or even worse you may dive in a deep valley and lose your life. Even we can not recognize our family members in darkness and that’s why it’s a time to sleep. Human could not work at night and couldn’t travel at when it was dark.

Our life in this small globe is always in darkness and we are always in the danger to lose the way and fall headward in problem . we need a light to find our way. We need a light to show us the right way from the wrong way and guide us to our destination. In our everyday life we need this light and there is no time to stay needless. Jesus Christ is the light in our life. He is the one we can trust on him and follow him to leave the darkness of our life .
