Having role models is important. People you look up to and that you get inspiration from. Growing up in Sweden being adopted and being a different skin colour I had a hard time finding role models. When I was 4 years old I actually thought that you became white when you grew up, because I had never seen an older black person. I grew up in a very small town in Sweden and later moved and grew up in a more diverse city. Although there will always be that small feeling of never fitting in. Although Sweden is my country and I am no different than anyone else other than my skin type.
My first ever role model was Brandy the RnB singer. There wasn’t many black young singers out there, but with MTV it opened a new world to me. I got more inspiration how you can do your hair and make-up being dark skinned. Then along came Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé and many after that. Today I look up to hard working women black or white. Who stand for being themselves, no matter size or looks. Sure I like the finer things in life and I am into fashion and beauty. But I also know that being yourself is important. Confidence is the best makeup! It’s not always easy being confident but I get inspired by all my role models and if they can so can I !
