December 27, 2017

Today is December 27th, which means that there has been Christmas here in KIngston in two days. I have celebrated Christmas in many places in the world for example America, but no place has been like this in Jamaica. Unlike some Americans- Jamaicans like their holidays lengthy, in fact many companies close for the entire week between Christmas and New Year's Day I was told, because when I wanted to buy the last Christmas gifts in the Christmas morning, almost all the stores were closed, but at last we found one that wasn't closed.

I think it was quite strange because in my home country Sweden the stores are open until before lunch.

On December 25 we woke up early in the morning, around 6am to go to church service.

Then we visited a Grand Market to greet the day. This is a street fair held all over the island during the holiday season, with vendors selling toys, sweet and crafts.

Parents often take their children to Grand Market on Christmas day to pick out some toys. While the children in Sweden lie in bed awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus.

Then in the evening we opened Christmas presents and it was really fun and cozy.

Then it was time for the highlight of the day (according to me) and that's the food. The christmas dinner tasted so good. We ate roast chicken, rice and peas with sorrel to drink. Sorrel is a plant, which is steeped hot, then cooled and mixed with ginger, sugar and white rum. Its red bright color makes it a great holiday drink.

And then to the dessert we ate pudding which was delicious, It's very similar to the type made in England but different from the Swedish christmas dinner.

Later in the evening we just took it easy and watched movies, I had a great time during Christmas and it's probably not my last Christmas celebration here.
