​Too many swimming pool construction projects become failures because the homeowner and contractor started on the wrong foot, too often because of the lack of effective communication. Here are tips that will increase the chances for getting off on the right foot by asking the right questions and having the right mindset.

Ask Yourself Important Questions First

As much as possible, you must have a clear idea of what you need and want in your swimming pool before meeting with a general contractor. You will then be able to discuss the crucial matters that will have a significant impact on the results. Your questions should include the following:

  • What’s your budget? The larger the pool, the bigger the budget especially when there are special facilities and amenities that come with it.
  • What are the zoning restrictions in your area? Your yard may be unsuitable for certain types, shapes and sizes of pools because of the ordinances in the locality.
  • What are the must-have safety measures and insurance that you can afford?

Your contractor will also have questions of his own that will determine the final design and budget for your new pool. You must be prepared for surprises in swimming pool construction, too, since there may be unplanned costs, as is the case with new home construction.  Your contractor, however, should be able to keep these costs to a minimum, no more than 10% of the total estimated costs.

Discuss the Details of the Plan

Your general contractor will conduct in-depth discussions about your needs and wants in the swimming pool. You should set realistic expectations as there are factors beyond control, such as the type of soil, terrain, and accessibility for construction equipment. Even your new home construction plan can have an impact on the swimming pool plans, such the foundation’s location in relation to the drainage system.

A few things to remember about swimming pool design:

  • A level yard makes for easier and faster pool installation. Ask your contractor about new technologies, nonetheless, that will make it possible to build a pool in a non-level terrain.
  • A set of severe conditions, such as rocky soil, steep slopes, and inaccessible terrain for heavy equipment, will add to the project’s overall cost and timeframe.
  • An area usually has zoning and building restrictions that must be followed by the homeowners and contractors. Otherwise, the building permit will either not be approved or revoked when violations are proven. These restrictions can include fencing and barriers, proximity to utility lines, and pool depth requirements, among others.

Based on these considerations, your design for a swimming pool construction project can either be above-ground or in-ground. Each type has its pros and cons with above-ground pools being more economical from construction to maintenance.
